A lot people in a recruitment position, comment on the importance of attitude when hiring a new staff member. Usually summed up as “You can train skills, not attitudeâ. This is also a major factor in determining a cultural fit.
Attitude has a major impact on our careers, our motivation and also our health. The tricky part is that it’;s not just our attitude that affects these things, it’;s also those of who we work for and with.
You could be a person that is naturally full of pep and gives any task a burl. But if you’;re working close with people of the polar opposite, you will soon find that draining.
Recently I started work for a company where the cultural fit has been fantastic. There has been a great attitude match between myself and my peers. Impromptu whiteboard sessions, end up turning into a thought experiment. Absolutely tops.
I work with some ripper networking guys, who have a similar attitude. This is great because networking isn’;t my strongest skillset. I have learnt a huge amount of practical (not textbook) networking knowledge. All due to a common positive attitude towards knowledge sharing and assisting.
Companies without this positive attitude of sharing and collaboration. Have resulted in knowledge being held back, crappy attitude and disdain for the workplace.
Now the point of this post isn’;t to say “I’;ve got a sweet gigâ. The point is to say when looking for a new job, do what you can to assess the attitude of the company seriously. Try to find out if current staff members, blog or have some sort of community involvement. This can help provide insight into who you will be working alongside.
